Why didn't my Michigan deck hold up after a year?

There are several reasons why deck sealers and stains do not hold up. The most common is that the deck was not prepped right. Anytime a finish is applied all of the previous coating must be removed by using a deck stripper followed with a light pressure washing or power washing of the deck. box stores. They carry products for novice users and don't carry the high quality oil based products necessary to protect your deck. The last reason is that the stain was probably sprayed, which usually comes out uneven on the flooring. Your deck needs to be professionally refinished if you want expert results. All the old sealer must be removed by a chemical stripper. Cedar grain will naturally raise when it's stripped, so a professional wood restorer will remove as much of the fuzzies as possible. A professional grade oil based wood sealer should be considered. Cedar looses its natural oils over time. Olympic and TWP oil based wood sealers and Preservatives will replenish most of the lost natural oils protecting the wood inside and out. Every two years a deck should be cleaned and sealed. New cedar wood decks will not hold as much oil based sealer in that natural oils are still present. Thus, you may need to refinish a new cedar deck at the first anniversary of sealing and then go to a 2 year maintenance program.

A pressure washer is simply a tool to help speed up the deck cleaning process. If a company is using it to strip, remove, or restore your deck with out using a stripping material, they are not doing the job right and will destroy your deck. We never use high pressure to strip a deck; instead we properly use bio-degradable cleaners and strippers to remove failed stain and sealers to strip a deck. We only apply non-film building transparent stains that are contractor friendly. We typically use TWP, Rymar, Olympic, Sikkens, and Superdeck. We do NOT spray any of our deck sealer, deck stains, or preservatives. All of our deck stain that we apply are all hand brushed for top quality. Of course, there are a few exceptions such as gazebo ceilings. All new cedar deck owners love the way their deck looks when it is first built and wet. This is the look they all want, so they think clear will give them that. It will for that summer. Next spring the deck will have a silver appearance to it. Clear sealers including TWP clear and TWP 1500 clear contain NO UV protection. If you use one, your deck will turn gray in less than 1 year. All brands considered.

.	When to stain a new deck? There is no advantage to wait to seal a new outdoor wood deck. Cedar and treated wood needs to be cleaned properly prior to staining. Mill glaze needs to be removed so the sealer can soak into the wood. There is not a best stain for a new deck. Any first application will only last 1 year. We recommend TWP stain on all new cedar and treated decks.
	Solid Color or Paint and Stain A popular option with homeowners is what we call paint and stain. This is where the vertical rails are painted with a solid color stain (usually to match the house) and a transparent coating is applied to the flooring. This will eliminate the chances of the floor peeling. Once the rails however are painted there is no longer the option to go natural in the future. We can paint your existing deck if it has been painted.
	Restore your Boat Dock with the deck. If you live on a lake in Michigan chances are you have a wooden boat dock. Many people neglect them and they have an inch of mold on them. If left unprotected they become very slippery. By cleaning and sealing your boat dock it will extend the life and appearance of it. When its time do restore the deck, remember to do ask for an estimate to stain other exterior wood. Like, Railroad ties, Furniture, picnic table, and the boat dock.

	Even in Deck Cleaning you get what you pay for This is what can happen when an inexperienced company is hired. The stain that is on the brick will not come out. Stain is very light and travels far even with slight amounts of wind; cleanup can be a nightmare, if not impossible.

	Detail Work - Composite Floor With Cedar Rails Cedar rails with a composite or Trex floor is becoming very popular with homeowners. This type of staining is very time consuming and expensive. When the wood rails are stained you can not get a drip on the composite floor. Masking tape can not be used when staining because the oil in the stain will release the glue off the tape leaving it on the floor. The complete deck needs to be done free hand. Supreme Deck can remove most of the mold and restores composite decking to close to the original. A waterborne composite deck sealer will prevent mold from forming as fast. By using a composite cleaner and by power washing or the surface we can eliminate most of the black mold spots. Just a simple power wash or pressure wash will not work alone. Many deck owners need to realize that chemicals clean and water rinses. Most composite manufactures recommend that composite material should be sealed with a water based deck sealer to prevent mold from forming as fast. By using a composite cleaner and pressure washing the composite deck we can eliminate most of the black mold spots. Just a simple power wash or pressure wash will not work alone. Azek, Trex Transcend, capped composite are the only decks we see that do not need to be sealed. Trex and other composite decks still need a good cleaning once a year for maintenance.
